Two members of our Social Media team at PodCamp Topeka

The RCIL Social Media team was able to attend PodCamp Topeka on November 6th at the Topeka Shawnee County Public Library. PodCamp is an “un-conference” dedicated to web media in all of its’ forms. We met great people, heard wonderful presentations, and came back to our offices ready to really get going on Social Media.

One of the first things we decided when we sat down to talk about our experiences at the PodCamp was the need to educate both our staff and our employees on the benefits of Social Media for our agency and consumers. Because many of the people that we serve are in rural areas or have very limited incomes; the need for internet based networking and services may not be immediately apparent.

So, why are we concentrating on Social Media? There are several reasons but the one that I am most excited about is the ability for our consumers to really become involved. Internet access is increasingly affordable, available, and utilized by people with disabilities across Kansas.

One of the most inspiring things we heard at PodCamp was the story of Amy Kiel who is a very active online Health Activist. She shared with us how connecting to peers on the internet really changed her life and gave her an opportunity to use her voice to empower herself and others. Please check out her blog, Una Vita Bella.

Another reason that Social Media is very important at our agency is the ability that it gives us to make ourselves and our resources available to a very wide audience. Not only are we able to quickly share what’s going on with us but we are able to communicate Advocacy actions, community events, and available resources to anyone with internet access.

We are very excited about our journey into Social Media and hope that you will follow us. You can find us here on our blog, on Twitter, Facebook, and LinkedIn. We want to hear from you! Let us know what information you need or want, share your story with us, connect with us.
