Tornado Season – Be Prepared

Living in Kansas we know the weather is unpredictable. Since that is the case we should always be prepared for a severe storm including a tornado. Everyone should have a plan in place of where they will go in the case of a tornado and how will they get there. For individuals with physical disabilities something things to think about: Will you need to find an different route due to debris? Do you have a plan if the elevator isn’t working?
Some items to pack in your preparedness kit:
- First aid kit
- Water (3 gallons/person)
- Food (non-perishable)
- Can opener
- Flashlight
- Battery operated radio
- Shoes & a change of clothing
- Prescriptions
- Whistle (flare is also an option)
- Blanket/sleeping bag
- Matches
- Candles
- Cell phone and charger
- Trash bags
- Wet wipes
Other items to consider:
- Baby items (food, diapers, formula, etc.)
- Pet items (food, extra water)
- Feminine supplies
- Important documents (insurance, identification)
- Money
Rescue crews will be on the scene but it will take time for them to get to everyone. Make sure you have everything you need packed and ready for several days. Also keep in mind that utilities could be out for much longer so plan ahead for that as well.
