RCIL Expands Core Services to Shawnee County

Topeka – The Resource Center for Independent Living, Inc. (RCIL) recently received state and federal awards to provide its “Core Services” to individuals with disabilities in Shawnee County.  Shawnee County is being added to RCIL’s current fifteen county service area throughout Eastern Kansas.  Core Services include: Information and Referral Service; Advocacy; Independent Living Skills Training; Peer Support Services; Youth Services and Deinstitutionalization.  RCIL will provide the services from its office in Topeka which is located at 1507 SW 21st Street, Suite 203.          

RCIL is not new to Topeka or Shawnee County and has provided numerous services in Shawnee over the years including Targeted Case Management, Assistive Technology services, services for the older, blind population and much more.  RCIL’s current Financial Management (Payroll) Services for the Home and Community Services Medicaid Waiver programs and Braille translation services will continue to be available from the office in Topeka. 

“As RCIL approaches its 40th anniversary of as a Center for Independent Living, we are honored to have the opportunity to expand our reach to the citizens of Shawnee County”, said Deone Wilson, RCIL executive director. “We are ready to hire a full-time Assistant Director and four full-time Independent Living Specialists/Consumer Advocates that will get to work supporting goal achievement, improving access and so much more.”   Adam Burnett, RCIL’s director of core services, will be managing the expansion and knows the vital importance of the services being offered, “Independent Living is all about persons with disabilities acquiring the resources and learning the skills they need to be able to live, work, and play in the community setting of their choice.  We look forward to meeting with other organizations and disability service providers across the county to learn how we can partner and best serve consumers.”
